Antti Miettinen signed with the Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL in Russia.

The 2008-2009 season marked Antti Miettinen’s first with the Minnesota Wild and his fifth in the NHL. By the time the Minnesota Wild signed him in July 2008, Antti Miettinen was officially a multi-millionaire: his three contract was set for $7 million. The following year, Miettinen proved himself worthy of such a high salary. He had 15 goals, 29 assists, and 44 points tallied by season’s end.

Antti Miettinen’s NHL career started when he entered the 2000 draft. The Dallas Stars picked Antti Miettinen in the 7th round and the 224th choice overall. He moved up to the AHL and spent time with the Utah Grizzlies and Hamilton Bulldogs to improve his game. His first full NHL season rolled around in 2005-2006 and he scored 11 goals for the Dallas Stars during his inaugural season.

Yet one other event marked Antti Miettinen’s hockey career and perhaps overshadowed even the excitement of the draft and NHL playing time. In 2006, Miettinen was selected to be a member of Finland’s hockey team for the Winter Olympics. Though the honor was huge, Miettinen’s body couldn’t quite keep it together long enough and he was sidelined with injury.

Antti Miettinen’s ties with Finland remain strong to this day. He was born in the town of Hameenlinna, grew up in Finland, and played in various leagues until he was 23 years old. Today he makes frequent trips back home to the country where he first learned about hockey and began to master its skills.
