More Info
Casey Wellman took an interesting route to the Minnesota Wild. The majority of NHL players are drafted and have their opportunity to prove their selection. That was not the case with Casey Wellman.
Casey Wellman hales from Brentwood, California. The California native was born in 1987, so he is one of the younger players on the team. Before he ever got his chance with the Minnesota Wild, it started with his high school team in Michigan. After moving to Michigan he played for Cranbrook Kingswood High School and won state titles in 2004 and 2006.
After high school, Casey Wellman played in the United States Hockey League for two seasons with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. He was able to get a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst from his successful play in the USHL. At UMASS-Amherst he scored 33 points and 45 points in two seasons, in both seasons under 40 games.
After his sophomore season with the UMASS-Amherst, Casey Wellman was courted by several NHL teams. On March 16, 2010 Casey Wellman agreed to a 2 year entry level contract as a college free agent wtih the Minnesota Wild. In 12 games, he scored 1 goal for 4 points with the team in 2009-2010.
Casey Wellman will be playing to prove that you don't need to be drafted to be a successful NHL hockey player. He has improved nearly every year he's played and will be looking to contribute this season with the Minnesota Wild.
