2011-2012 NHL Season update: plays for San Jose Sharks.
Meet James Sheppard, a FORMER forward for the Minnesota Wild.
James Sheppard has brought new fans to Minnesota Wild games: high school and college girls who have fallen for his youthful exuberance and talent…and his good looks don’t hurt, either. And at such a young age himself, Sheppard isn’t much older than his packs of fans.
James Sheppard was born April 25, 1988 in Nova Scotia and has had a quick and successful rise to the ranks of professional hockey. As a boy, Sheppard played in Nova Scotia's minor hockey programs and in 2003 he moved up into the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League. During his rookie season, Sheppard scored an amazing 92 points in only 61 games.
In the summer of 2004, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles drafted James Sheppard as 1st overall. In addition to his stint with the Screaming Eagles, Sheppard was selected as captain for the Team Atlantic in the World Under-17 Championship. Under Sheppard’s guidance, Team Atlantic captured the bronze medal.
In 2006, James Sheppard was drafted as the 9th overall pick in the 1st round, and Minnesota’s first pick overall. The Wild brought Sheppard to the NHL for the 2007-2008 season and he recorded 4 goals and 15 assists during regular season play. Sheppard also saw some playing time during Minnesota’s playoffs against Colorado, and he had one assist and averaged about 11 minutes of ice time during the intense match-up.
During the 2008-2009 season, James Sheppard scored 5 goals and had 19 assists. He saw limited playing time though he also didn’t get sent down to AHL so the Minnesota Wild are clearly still interested in developing this player. Sheppard signed a multi-year deal with the Minnesota Wild in 2006, so he’ll be around for several seasons to come. Look to Sheppard to develop his NHL game and inspire new enthusiasm among young and old fans alike.
The 2009-2010 NHL season proved to be a bit underwhelming for James Sheppard as he scored only six points in 64 games. The Wild did resign the young James Sheppard to a 1 year contract for the 2010-11 season, but on August 6, 2011, Sheppard was traded to the San Jose Sharks for a 3rd round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
