Martin Skoula was born on Oct. 28, 1979 in Litomerice, Czech Republic. He started playing hockey at the age of five. As a child, Skoula’s favorite hockey players were Brian Leetch and Slava Fetisov.

Martin Skoula was drafted 17th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. In his amateur career, he played two seasons with Barrie in the OHL. The defenseman had 21 goals and 82 assists in 133 games there. His +58 plus/minus ratio in the 1998-99 season was a franchise record for Barrie. After this impressive work in OHL, the Avalanche called him up for the 1999-00 season.

In his rookie season, Martin Skoula skated in 80 games for the Colorado Avalanche while scoring three goals and 16 points. He finished tied for seventh among rookie defenseman in scoring. After playing for the Avalanche, Skoula also played for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Dallas Stars until the Minnesota Wild acquired him from Dallas in a trade for Willie Mitchell on March 9, 2006. Skoula finished up the rest of the 2005-06 season with the Wild, skating in 17 games and tallying six points. In his professional career, Martin Skoula has appeared in 482 National Hockey League games, scoring 34 goals and 143 points. He has only missed five games over his career due to injury.

In the offseason, Skoula and his German Sheppard, Ixor, live in Litomerice, Czech Republic. He likes to mountain bike and play tennis when he’s not playing his Xbox. He also likes to train Ixor as one of his hobbies.
