More Info
Mikko Koivu is one of two Koivu brothers currently playing for the NHL (brother Saku is the captain of the Montreal Canadiens). Clearly Mikko grew up in a hockey family and though Mikko may find himself on the other side of the puck as Saku in the NHL, the brothers frequently play as teammates internationally, most recently scoring a bronze medal at the 2008 Men's World Ice Hockey Championships in Canada.
The international sphere has been the place of more action for Mikko Koivu than the NHL; however, Koivu has been working to secure more ice team with the Minnesota Wild. During Koivu’s second season with the Wild in 2006-2007, he recorded 20 goals and 34 assists. Koivu saw about 18 minutes of ice time during this season and played in all 82 games.
In 2007-2008, Mikko Koivu increased his ice time by nearly 7 minutes (24:48). Koivu scored 11 goals and 31 assists, down slightly from the previous season. During the playoffs in 2008, Koivu scored 4 goals and had 1 assist against Colorado.
In 2008-2009, Koivu played well. He scored 20 goals and had 47 assists. Additionally, he was selected to be the Minnesota Wild team captain—a big honor indeed! In the 2009-2010 season, Mikko Koivu scored a career high 22 goals and 71 points.
Mikko Koivu got his start in hockey in his hometown of Turku, Finland where he was born on March 12, 1983. Minnesota picked Koivu in the first round of the 2001 draft as the 6th pick overall. Koivu has been with the Wild ever since. In the 2010 offseason, Mikko Koivu signed a franchise record seven-year, $47 million contract extension that will keep him in Minnesota through the 2017-2018 season.
