Nick Johnson was acquired by the Minnesota Wild on September 29, 2011. Johnson was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Johnson had been selected by Pittsburgh in the third round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

For the 2010-2011 season, Johnson was placed on injured reserve retroactive to 2/16 due to a concussion. Nick Johnson stayed on the injured reserve for the remainder of the regular season.
