We can all name a dozen American NHL players, a handful of Finlanders, and even more Canadians. But, Irish NHL players? Those are harder to come by. In fact, Owen Nolan is just one of six NHL players in all of history. Though he emigrated to Canada before his first birthday, his Irish heritage and name make him unique in the NHL.

And that’s just where Owen Nolan starts separating from the crowd. Read his biography and you’ll soon learn that other distinctive traits soon follow. For instance, Nolan didn’t even lace up a pair of skates until he was 9 years old—years later than many current NHL players. Today he operates not one, but two restaurants down in San Jose, California. And, as fans know, his nickname (“Cowboy”) refers to his rather hapless and full-bodied playing habits, a style that has brought great success on the ice.

The Minnesota Wild picked up Nolan in 2008 when he signed a 2-year, $5.5 million contract. During the 2008-2009 season, Owen Nolan scored 25 goals with 20 assists. In a match-up against the San Jose Sharks in March 2009, Owen Nolan recorded his 400th (and 401st) goals of his NHL career, much to the celebration of loyal fans.

One of Owen Nolan’s proudest hockey moments occurred in the 2002 Winter Olympics. He was part of the team that captured the gold medal that year. Over the years, Nolan has played for the Calgary Flames, Phoenix Coyotes, Toronto Maple Leafs, San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, and the Québec Nordiques. Today he is a veteran of the league and a leader in maturity and experience among the relatively young Minnesota Wild players.
